Thirteen years have passed since the death of Sung In-kyu, a former member of the multinational idol group A'st1 and former child actor, who died at age 24 on February 22, 2013 [1]. Sung passed away while undergoing treatment for stage 2 thymus cancer, a rare disease that had metastasized to the veins in his neck [1][3].
Born in 1988, Sung In-kyu began his career as a child actor. He appeared in the KBS2 drama Sharp 2, SBS's Rustic Period, and the sitcom Can't Stop Them [2]. In 2000, he played the young version of So Ji-sub’s character in the drama Wang Rung's Land [2].
He transitioned to music in 2008, debuting as a member of the multinational male group A'st1 [1]. The group released singles including "1234 Back" and "Dynamite" before disbanding in December 2009 after approximately 20 months of activity [1].
Colleagues and fellow idols shared tributes following his death. A'st1 leader Park Jung-jin recalled his resilience: "He must have had a hard time during chemotherapy, but he always answered the phone with a bright voice. I hope he can now close his eyes in peace" [1].
Former labelmates from KARA and Rainbow also offered condolences. Park Gyu-ri posted, "I just can't believe it... May he rest in peace," while Nicole shared, "Back in our trainee days, you always joked around and listened to all my foolish complaints like a real brother" [2][4]. 2PM's Nichkhun added, "Condolences to the family of our friend Ingyu. Rest in peace now" [2].
The memory of Sung In-kyu lives on through his former bandmates. Lim Han-byul expressed his commitment to their shared passion: "Hyung, rest well first. I will keep doing music for both of us" [4]. Fans and the industry continue to remember the artist on the anniversary of his passing for his dedication to his craft despite his physical struggles.
